I don't know what a lady sovereign is, other than the literal translation of 'female monarch'.

It's also based on similar genetical logic to that used by the Nazis. Only, of course, changing the letters 'sl' in 'Slavs' to 'ch'.

lu how come you have to be nice to fat people and not chavs..? after all being a chav is as much an inherited/situation condition as morbid obesity.

Because obesity is a diesease caused by several factors (not neccessarily inherited) and is hard to beat, anyone who's ever been on a diet can tell you that. It is NOT due to greed and laziness in most cases, despite what most people in the population seem to think. Being a chav on the otherhand is a lifestyle choice, and i have had enough grief from chavs to last a lifetime. so scuse me if i dont have much sympathy for them

In answer to alice's point, I think both sets of mockery are linked to both behaviour AND look. if you see a picture of a chav, you might mock it, though you haven't seen this person do anything chav-like. And in answer to lucy, I would cite the huge amounts of psychological evidence showing that the way we are brought up effects the people we become. if we have already made fun of chavs and theirchavvy children, we must accept that chaviness is an inherited or nurtured psychological state, which is pretty much inescapable to the child. I would disagree that being a chav is not neccessarily a 'lifestyle choice' but rather a lifestyle enforced by poverty, peer pressure, a lack of education and respect, in any combination.
I'm not saying we shouldn't make fun of chavs, I'm just pointing out the hypocrasy of taking the high moral ground on making fun of one minority group but not others. I do not exclude myself from this point, it just occured to me to make it.

I do not exclude myself from this point, it just occured to me to make it. I don't agree on every count, but fair point well made Personally I see the behavioural side as definitive of chavvishness (without the stereotypical aggressive behaviour, you've just got someone who likes their Burberry). I agree that a lot of being a chav is enforced, but I also think people have to take responsibility for their actions after a certain point. This is partly true with a minority of fat people, who are that way simply because of overeating and lack of exercise - but the majority of the 'problem' (not that it should be called that) is, in their case, genetic - and there's nothing anyone can do about their genes. I agree that it's wrong to mock a particular group of people, no matter who they are - but I also think there are different degrees of mockery. I can say from experience that having someone make fun of you because of your weight is far more hurtful than because of how you act.

oh isn't it nice to have a rational debate on the internet?
I think 'fat' is far too wide a definition really, seeing as it seems to encompass everyone from the gorgeously curvy to the morbidly obese. Things like the rubbish BMI, give us such a narrow band of 'normal' (for instance it describes me as underweight and alice as overweight despite us both being absolutely normal considering our height and body type) that it its almost impossible to keep to it.
I often wonder if it offends a chav to call them a chav? Would we keep doing it if we saw a headline reading "Girl commits suicide after "Chav" accusations at school?" Considering that it is deemed unnacceptable to make fun of/discriminate against people based on race/gender/sexuality/age, why is it acceptable to make fun of, what is probably at heart, an issue of class? Considering that, with a few notable exceptions chavs almost entirely belong to what 50 years ago would have been called 'Working class' families.
