oh isn't it nice to have a rational debate on the internet? I think 'fat' is far too wide a definition really, seeing as it seems to encompass everyone from the gorgeously curvy to the morbidly obese. Things like the rubbish BMI, give us such a narrow band of 'normal' (for instance it describes me as underweight and alice as overweight despite us both being absolutely normal considering our height and body type) that it its almost impossible to keep to it. I often wonder if it offends a chav to call them a chav? Would we keep doing it if we saw a headline reading "Girl commits suicide after "Chav" accusations at school?" Considering that it is deemed unnacceptable to make fun of/discriminate against people based on race/gender/sexuality/age, why is it acceptable to make fun of, what is probably at heart, an issue of class? Considering that, with a few notable exceptions chavs almost entirely belong to what 50 years ago would have been called 'Working class' families. Its tru. BMI is one of the least accurate and frankly poorly researched ways of measuring whether body weight is correct. Hip to waist ratio is far more reasonable. and when it comes to weight problems, Obesity is as much a diesease as anorexia, caused by social, behavioral, cultural, physiologic, metabolic and genetic factors. Lets face it, very few people want to be fat, so how can it be implied it is their choice? When it comes to Chavs though i really can see few excuses. Poverty- Oh yeah? so why are they wearing the latest sports gear, constantly adding ridulculous accesories to their cars (blue lights, loud soundsystems etc), wasting there money on fags and alcohol. peer pressure- You choose your friends, so why choose a group who represent something you dont want from life? Society- ASBO's were created for a reason, if you dont want one, sort your life out. No-one can make you into a criminal but you I fully accept the self fufilling prophecy theory that if people expect certain behaviours of you, you will eventually conform to this behavioural pattern simply because it is the only option that appears to be avaliable. But i also argue that everyone is free to make there own choices. if you put in the effort, you can pull yourself out of a hard background and into a new life. but the fact is , most chavs are proud of what they are. And if they're gonna put me down because of the life i've chosen, im damn well gonna take every shot i can get, cheap or not

and I honestly do think some of them can't help it. You watch supernanny, and the whole nature vs nurture debate becomes horrifyingly clear to you.
I hate to admit it, but I think Mum's 'Blame the parents' attitude might be the most accurate.

I definitely think nurture beats nature (to put it crudely), and I think that a lot of our behaviour depends on the way we were brought up (whether we conform, rebel, or are normal and do a little bit of both, our parents are still our biggest influence) But I still think there's a point where everyone realises that the rest of the world doesn't work in exactly the same way as your family does, and that's when you make your own choice.
As an example, did anyone see Louis Theroux's programme on the neo Nazis? There were two twin girls who were cute, sweet, normal children except for the fact that they'd been brought up as the poster children for white supremacy by their psycho mother. They were only about eight, so its understandable that they wouldn't have formed their own political opinions yet, and would still be taking their mother's word as gospel - if a child has only ever heard black people referred to by the n word, that's the word they're going to use. But when they get older, they get more experienced, and the way they live becomes their own responsibility.
