Because all people care about is a transparent excuse to ingest poisonous substances. Clearly.

Yeah, why can't we drink ourselves stupid on St George's? Killing a dragon seems like a bloody good excuse to get wasted if you ask me...

Depends whether it was an real dragon (of the sort thats bites you ,then u die of poisoning from its grubbiness), just a large lizard or a fairytale style dragon (i cant prove they exist or not)

Depends whether it was an real dragon (of the sort thats bites you ,then u die of poisoning from its grubbiness), just a large lizard or a fairytale style dragon (i cant prove they exist or not) or in fact a metaphor for paganism... "oh wow, george you really slayed those heathen's belief system, hooray for you." whereas st. patrick, he got rid of snakes! everyone believes in snakes, and do you see any snakes in ireland? no! there fore st. patrick trumps st. george...

By the same logic, I could claim to have rid the British Isles of Duck Billed Platypi...

But there were no duck billed platypi in the british isles before you were born, therefore you cannot claim to have personally ridded the country of them. You may have maintained there absence, but as that is a long term activity it would be impossible to specify a particular day in which you should be celebrated for it. I suppose you could start some sort of religious type cult to celebrate your achievement........

No duck billed platypi in Britain before I was born, eh? Am I to take that concrete statement of fact to imply that you also have equally hard evidence that there were snakes in Ireland up until (and only up until) Patrick's appearance?

Thing is, there actually is a St. Timothy's day. Even if he was just St. Paul's groupie. It is in January though.

Nope i have no proof and it does seem highly unlikely, but seeing as a whole day of fun is based on the principle that it happened, what reason do i have to argue that he didnt drive out the snakes?

Just pointing out the idiocy of placing St. Patrick over any other saint for something he probably didn't do, really...

considering that the vast majority of saints stories run along the lines of "So there was this cool guy, you know, spreading the word, and he did some miracles, then the heathens burned/stoned/hanged/dragged out his entrails" I think they deserve a break,

the sad thing is that i probably shouldnt be celebrating saints days anyways. seeing as im not christian, i dont suppose a person being a saint should make any difference to me. atleast the christians (and any other religion that recognises saints) can make a slight excuse for the partying
