Here's one (that I know the answer to, but is fun anyway): How did the urban myth begin that carrots improve eyesight? =^-^=

This isn't a 'Quiz Tim' thread. There's no point answering things that you already know...

wasn't that also to confuse germans and hide the fact we could blow shit up after dark because we had radar? I know the answer but it's one of those things that hovers about on the edge of your brain.

Yup. Tied in with the previous topic which I just learned recently while indulging in a bored Wikipedia or TV Tropes reading spree about the Battle of Britain. ^^

can imagine it now
in german camp "how is it zat zey are blowing our shit up after dark? vat iz zis? magic?" (nazis are big on magic if you believe the hype) "zen let us spy in on zere conferzations"
In english camp "Uh oh they're listening in- quick shh shh!" "I say Miffy old chap, how about those *pfffft* carrots we gave you?" "Oh it's all rather jolly, Froggy! I can see in the dark jolly well after eating all those *snrrk* CARROTS. No trouble at all blowing up Gerry's with my new CARROT vision" *muffled laughter*
*Nazi confusion ensues*

The silliness of the ploy is made all the more amusing when you consider that the Germans had developed radar at essentially the same time that the British had.

Well, it's not so silly as long as they didn't find out we had it too. (Did they find out? I'd imagine there would have been a lot of spies working for the Nazis over here, because of all the phobia about communism amongst the upper classes, but maybe I'm being unfair).

They knew we had radar. They just didn't have as advanced radar as we did, and didn't know how well we had learned how to utilize it. At one point they did try taking out some of the radar towers, but they only had marginal success in that.

They did have radar that was just as advanced (in fact better in some ways). They just hadn't built as much of a radar infrastructure as we had.

Ok heres one for you tim
What is the only english league football team whose name begins with 5 consonants?

Presumably you'd be referring to Crystal Palace.

Although with that said, if you go just a little bit below the Football League then that gets trumped. For example, 'Blyth Spartans' (from the Conference North) could be said to begin with 7 consonants.

it's not the quiz tim thread! look if you boys bother him with silly questions you know the answers to, he'll be less likely to answer my *valid* questions about life the universe and everything.

Those are becoming all the rarer these days... Perhaps over time you've been subconsciously imbued with enlightenment via some manner of Space Ray.

Okay, a non-quiz-Tim question. What's the first documented use of a double bluff? I suspect it's in the Bible, but there are a fair few things that pre-date the Old Testament, so maybe not.

not true. only last year I asked you who I should vote for. I can think of questions- it's just that in my grumpy old age they are more likely to consist of "why is so and so such a twat?"

Nah, Stu, it's got to be a question you don't know the answer to and genuinely want to know, otherwise it's just showing off
