Aw, poor Emily, here have a cup of tea.
Now get back to work.
X'o'Lore, what did you think of the ending of WoT? I finished it a while ago and I was an emotional wreck for two days afterwards.

I always stay up late and then sleep in on days-off. (Like today!!!) I should probably stop doing that. :/

X'o'Lore, what did you think of the ending of WoT? I finished it a while ago and I was an emotional wreck for two days afterwards. The ending seemed like there could have been a little more than there was. It kind of sets the stage for things to continue and just leaves it there without suggesting how anything actually pans out. Some parts of it were sad. I even felt bad for some of the villains. I wouldn't say I was an emotional wreck though. It'd really take quite a bit to make me an "emotional wreck".

RE: graduate schoooool
I'm applying for that too and it is so daunting! I want to go for art conservation and there are only three programs in the US and they each admit like... ten students every fall and that's it and it's so very competitive grrrargh. I'm also gonna apply to a master's program for Art History in case I don't get in to thooose. Grad school, what's with that.

Good luck with the applications Kew! My laptop died on Friday so I'm looking at another expense I really can't afford. It's going to cost me a minimum of £160 to fix my laptop and they don't know how bad the damage is so it could end up costing more. For that price I think I might just buy a new laptop, my current one is pretty old and this might be the first in a long line of repairs. (I didn't drop it or anything, the plug socket is scorched so it's not like it was a one time accident). But I don't know what kind of laptop to buy, I used to know a bit about computers but I've forgotten most of it. I have a HP and I don't think I want one of those again, my mum's old laptop was also HP and that died a horrible death too so I think I'd like to go with a new manufacturer but I have no idea who. I don't need anything fancy, just something to write, browse the internet on and watch videos. I haven't gamed on a laptop in years so I don't need anything really powerful. Recommendations and advice are very welcome.

Is this dead-dead? Or is it a-reboot-will-fix-it-dead?
"My" laptop is lenovo, and is about 2 years. And apart from shutting down when I took up a ton of the RAM, it's been pretty good. (The reset button right next to the power button, and the lack of physical volume control is a bit annoying, though.)
@kew: Whoa. That's really low entrance rate. As someone who's good at "school stuff", but still didn't get accepted into a big ivy-league school in the US, I wish you the best of luck (because luck probably has something to do with it.) Grad school is ... on one hand it's great because more research and more staying in school, but on the other I'd like to avoid the over-qualified under-experienced designation at the end. : /

Are netbooks still a thing? A couple years ago, netbook would be the typical solution for your needs. (Inexpensive, but does all the basics. I've heard they also have really good battery life, though sometimes at the expense of speed.) Though the size might be a problem if it's your only computer - not good to be hunched over such a small keyboard and screen for too long at a time. In which case... look for laptop that is cheap but has good reviews for durability?
My dad likes to buy Dell refurbished computers - usually that just means someone returned it and so it had to get re-inspected, possibly have a part replaced. But it's cheaper. Like outlet stores, I guess. I have a laptop and a monitor from Asus, and they've both worked well for me, except for a few durability issues with the laptop. (The laptop screen gets pushed against the keyboard and gets a line pressed into it when I put the laptop in a backpack, and one time the wires that connect the screen to the other half came loose on the inside when I took the laptop on an airplane and my dad had to take apart the screen half to fix it for me. Those might be my problem rather than the laptop's problem, though.)
My roommate has an Asus netbook that looks really nice. It has a metal case instead of plastic, so it's probably more durable than my laptop. It's also really, really small and light.

I'm not a fan of laptops in general, but I think I've said that. Too many experiences with them just not lasting.
Anyway, I picked out an HP for my mom somewhat recently and it's fine but it's also plastic and doesn't seem like it'd withstand a lot of travel wear. It works for her because she just uses it at the kitchen table pretty much all the time. Well, I also separately upgraded her hard drive to an ssd which is something I feel is a good move in a laptop, albeit a bit more expensive.
Netbooks are sort of still around, but the lower-grade processors in them don't see as many updates and the currently available hardware for them is more than a little stale for use in a cheap laptop replacement. I don't think I'd recommend those right now. If it were June or July, I'd possibly say something different.

Nobody's really making netbooks anymore because the market is all tablets right now. Only select companies make a model or two every now and then, and they certainly aren't improving by leaps and bounds like they were a few years ago and how tablets are now. I wish they were. :/
Also, I've have a 14" Toshiba Satellite for just shy of 2 years now, and it's pretty good. One of the 3 USB ports is busted, and it stops charging for no reason and dies on my from time to time, but besides that it's been pretty good to me. I am planning on replacing it no later than next summer unless it craps out on me sooner than that or I find the money.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do, my aunt recommended a repair man who might be able to fix it cheaper than the place we took it to but he hasn't answered the voicemail we left him. Since it's half-term I'm wondering if he's gone on holiday.
I'm still not sure if I want to get it fixed or get a new one.

I don't really know how old your old laptop is and how capable it is to know how much improvement a new one would be. Is the old one still running Windows XP? Do you know any of the hardware specs?
I'd think getting a new one would be better if you had enough saved up to afford a somewhat better one over a really cheap option, but depending on how old the old one is it might be getting to the point where even a really cheap new one would be better option. I'm not really sure where you're at.

I think I've had the laptop for about three and a half years and it runs Windows 7, the battery died a while ago so when I use it I always have to use the charger which might have been too much for it.
I think I've found a place that can give me a free diagnosis, hopefully a more detailed one than 'The socket is scorched, it'll cost you £50 just for us to tell you how bad it is.'
If a repair isn't too expensive I think I'll get it fixed and then save for a new one.

3.5 years is approximately the entire life of Windows 7 up until this point and maybe a bit extra, but regardless that should be new enough to make a fix worthwhile assuming it isn't a something too horrible. Unfortunately I'd be pretty worried about a scorched power socket. I've known more than one laptop to have a dead battery like that and at least one of the got used daily for years like that without related issues. If this was something like a power surge there could be more damage than just the socket and you won't know the score without getting it powering up again.

@ X'o'Lore I think I've had the laptop maybe two and a half years, or three. I think I got it just before I started my last year of uni.
Anyway, I sent it off to be repaired, should be £60-80, significantly cheaper than the price I was originally quoted, so fingers crossed.
Ally, it's been quite sunny here today too. I think calling it spring might be too far, if we say that the sun might get frightened and hide again.
