Yeah, the Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody episode (first one) was great, and a couple of episodes of Sighs were good, at least. And if you're still finding it annoying to get all the right episodes here's a batch torrent (it's also on BakaBT and better seeded but it shouldn't matter). Em, if you want just generally awesome series and you haven't watched those first two I mentioned (Pani Poni Dash and Hare & Guu), definitely give them a look at least. Especially the former since you liked Excel Saga, and from what I hear they've got alot in common. The latter is from the 2000-2003 period though so maybe you've seen it.

She's definitely seen Hare + Guu. I also believe I showed her a bit of Pani Poni Dash once - her primary amusement came simply from the name of the main character being Becky. After all PPD's stupidity is not on the same level of genius that Excel Saga's was, being more prone to an endless stream of pop culture references thrown out in quick flashes. It's a series that I'm unlikely to ever bother watching again, although I nonetheless retain the avatar gif for its own innate greatness.

Fair enough. In that case I will start checking out some of those series I mentioned and may revive the anime reviews thread if I consider any of them worth mentioning.

Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu- is how me and Yash made friends.
Yash: So you like anime... ehhh? (clearly expecting the usual "yeah i like pokemon and akira" nonsense) Have you seen Jungle wa itsumo hare nochi guu? Em: OMG YES! BEST SHOW EVER! Yash: AAAAAAAAA! A real anime fan!! *protracted flailing on both parts*
So yes I like it. Pani Poni dash not so much- although I can't exactly remember what i didn't like about it, it obviously didn't catch my interest.

Three episodes of Gankutsou watched today. A decent return for a couple of tedious train/bus journeys.
For some reason I'm a lot more comfortable watching anime on my own than with Yash. I have no idea why this is.

Because you don't get pummelled by a windmill of flailing arms whenever a cute bit happens?

has anyone seen fruits basket? i know it's not new, but since no one has talked about it in this post, i thought i'd give it a mention. it has its absolutely hilarious bits, among some more serious ones, and at the end it gets pretty weird.... but overall i thought it was really good.
um, what else have i been watching... karin (or i think it's referred to as chibi vampire sometimes) was entertaining. not epic, but better than a lot of other stuff i've come across recently. it does the whole vampire scene without becoming totally contrived or making your brain implode from emo-overload.
oh yeah! i'd also recommend azumanga diaoh. it's gotta be one of the funniest anime shows i've seen in a long time.
they've also come out with a sequel to the inuyasha anime that starts up where the first left off and covers the rest of the story, if you haven't heard of it already (or if you haven't grown tired of inuyasha).
skip beat is another i'd say is worth watching. the main character has her own little supernatural angry mini versions of herself that she uses to haunt people. pretty bizarre, but funny nonetheless.

Fruits Basket and Azumanga Daioh we certainly all know and adore. Inu Yasha is...heh, something that people have had to wean themselves off for their own good. >_>
Not sure if I've heard of Karin, but it's about vampires, so I personally wouldn't care even if I had heard of it.
The name Skip Beat rings a vague bell. I think from looking up a picture on Google, it may have been something that Yasha tried watching but couldn't be bothered after 3 or 4 episodes. I don't think I ever watched any of it myself...

That last post wasn't too caustic by Tim's standards...

I fail to see any causticity there.

oh don't worry, i'm not over-sensitive (you underestimate me so!) if i were, i don't think i'd have made it through high school.... and then through writing workshops (in college) up to 3100 level. besides, everybody i know makes fun of each other. it's how we express friendship anyway, i can't blame you for avoiding vampire anime. other than vampire hunter d, karin is the only one i've bothered to watch. vampires have just become so over-rated lately... inuyasha, i know, does not appeal to the masses (or the masses that one would want to associate them-self with anyway) i don't know if they've translated skip beat anime into english yet or not, but the several volumes of the manga have been published. on crunchyroll.com it's listed as 4th most popular (after naruto: shippuden, shugo chara, and naruto. in any case, it's around. (hence probably why it rings a bell if you haven't seen it) hmm, oh yeah the newest gundam series has been complete, gundam 00. usually i don't care for gundam myself, but i liked this one. (the only other one i've enjoyed enough to watch all the way through was gundam wing)

still liking inuyasha... although I've given up on the anime, I'm still reading the manga.
skip beat and karin I might grab a couple of episodes and give them a try- thanks for the recommends. But my standards are pretty high these days so don't be disappointed if I come back here grumbling about them.
Fruits basket and azumanga daioh are classics now, their awesomeness only adds to my anime is dead theory.

I liked Azumanga the first time I watched it, but to be honest after reading the manga I realised it's a really poor adaptation. The gags work in the 4-panel format due to brevity and understatement and Azuma's uncanny sense of timing, but in the anime most of them are strung out way longer than they need. It's not really got the good pacing or subtlety to work purely as slice-of-life, either. It's still a classic, since the good characters are still there (though Tomo is more annoying and less funny than in the manga), but it's too heavily flawed for me to consider it truly great anymore.
While the genre has since spawned some true horrors (K-On!, Lucky Star to a lesser extent, and probably others I've glossed over) I've seen examples that did both of those aspects better (Pani Poni for comedy, Sketchbook ~full color'S~ and Hidamari Sketch for slice-of-life), and there's still a couple I have yet to check out. I think any idea you might have that it somehow proves that anime is dead now is probably fueled more by nostalgia than anything else.
However, to put my complaining aside, Azuma recently put out 3 new chapters as part of the 10th Anniversary celebration. The first one was a bit crap but the other two were great, especially for Osaka's calling out Kaorin for being a dyke. And hey, Yotsuba&! is still perfect.

It is not *just* nostalgia... nostalgia is when you think things were great. I have a lot of these old series on dvd and I still watch them, still enjoy them- whereas new releases bore me to tears most of the time.

Well, it's only five volumes and has ended, but have you tried "Stray Little Devil"? I found it rather a bit of fun. ^^
Sadly I don't see many space opera/science fiction mangas these days (at least without giant mecha). *sigh*
