um...".part" is slightly concerning as it may indicate it's only a partial file. In any case it's an sql document and can be read as plain text. It's just a very big text file so something like notepad may be overwhelmed.

Unix "more" command is my good friend. Oh wait, the file has like 360,000 lines of SQL commands, which means that I can use the "head" and "tail" commands to read old posts...yays?
And still...we need to find a server that takes in a lot SQL commands.

I just started up a mysql server on my computer and imported the sql. There was one error that appeared minor, but it appears my thought that it is an incomplete backup is likely true.

Jeepers, Zammy, you're waaay taller than I though you were (because I have Internet opinions about people's heights??) The tallest person I know in real life is 6'4" and he's exactly a foot taller than I am ;___; Whoops, I've been mispronouncing "Elczenius" for years! haha Anyway, on to this re-introduction thing: Hey guys, it's Mango, except now I'm Margo because I'm Margo-something almost everywhere else. I'm in the middle of my second year of a Bachelor's in Animation at Sheridan (it's my second degree--I was doing English and Psych back when I first joined Tomgeeks) . It keeps me busy enough that I haven't visited the forums regularly since I started. I do this comic now and then called Witch and Cat, which I started back when I was but Zamisk's age. I like baking (even though my skills are middling), comics, animation (duh), BOOKS, historical costume research, havarti cheese, and diverse musics. I dislike asparagus, because ew. I am clemon's big sister! Mess with her and you mess with meeee

I might be required to agree with a positive assessment of incomprehensible usernames, but a pit of despair is a huzzah-worthy item now?
Welcome to the party Kew. We done crashed Em's largely unused forum.

So... does incomplete backup mean it's likely to be missing important data? Or that we might not be able to actually get to the data?
Also, the talk of being Zamisk's age is reminding me of back when Panda and I were the benchmarks for young tomkeek -ness.

It's weird being on a forum where I am the youngest and in the gender minority. Most forums I see (but never join, ugh) are guys my age and younger being annoying. The other forum I frequent more than here even is pretty much a 50/50 guys/gals split, with maybe 1/3 people my age and 2/3 people your guy's age, more or less.
Either way, accepting communities on the internet are a rare commodity, and I like this place.

I too have been pronouncing Elcy's name wrong. But then again, some people have pronounced clemon wrong (It's clemon like "lemon", not "CLEE-mon"!).
Anyway, I was once a young-un but at that age, I never posted as much as panda of Night Mare.

So... does incomplete backup mean it's likely to be missing important data? Or that we might not be able to actually get to the data? It's incomplete insofar as some tables are missing, most notably things like usernames. All the actual post contents appear to be there, so there is that. With what is there I think you could build out a sort of read-only setup with all the forum sections and threads, but all the users would be referred to only by a simple id number. Someone would have to talk to Lady Yates about it for something more complete.

Someone would have to talk to Lady Yates about it for something more complete. Hmm... might be possible to reconstruct which ID is which user, by downloading a few pages of the original site while it's still online and looking at which ID is with which post. That would be a pain in the butt, though. It just occured to me that I can play with MySQL in the command line without having a whole PHP server, so I'm running the part file right now. Will report back if I figure anything out.

...oh wow, X is right, there are no usernames with the posts. User IDs are there, but the users table is completely absent (I searched through the .sql.part file to check). So we'll have to either ask Lady Yates for the users table, or have someone comb through posts before the forum is deleted and have someone find one post for each user so we can reconstruct users' IDs. Getting the users table from Lady would be the much preferable solution.

Aaalso another problem is the file *does* include everyones' private messages. It should be pretty easy to make a version that doesn't have the private message table (drop the table and then make a mysqldump of it), but I don't know how to use mysqldump and don't have time to teach myself tonight. But making a pm-less version, uploading it, and deleting the one that does have PMs is something we should do at some point.

Oh...right, yeah, I did see those pm tables. I just emptied them right away. I also emptied an autoprune table. Some things are better off missing.
