talking to us on a semi regular basis is an acceptable alternative to giving us money. both things feed our fragile egos and convince us to keep making comics.

ah what kind of high-school comic would it be without sparkles?
I feel a bit sorry for the faeries, they kind of got sucked into the background.

They've got plenty of screen-time coming up, though... ;D

Yay! We've Jin's favorite phrase! =^-^=
Poor girl. She doesn't even think once of trying to keep Steve from being corrupted by Sparkle, or of warning him even. Tsk.

She had her own unhappiness to deal with, and she'd only just met him. Perhaps warning him didn't cross her mind.

Well, there's also what her brother is currently going through. This is the last couple of weeks of his faux-relationship with Sparkle. The point where you likely don't see him smile. Though whether the smile-less period was at this juncture or started when Sparkle started trying to sic Dan on An remains to be seen.
No doubt every single time Sparkle sees Jin, she cuts in with some subtle dig or a slightly insulting nickname that can sound endearing (especially when explained as such) but which anyone with half a brain and who manages some impartiality can see as the insult that it is. Add in the fact that Sparkle probably spends every moment possible with Dan, she's driving a wedge between Dan and Jin. This is probably the first time the twins have really been apart. Jin's not happy... and Dan's realizing at this point that he's not that happy either.
Enter into this the new magical individual, Steve. What started out to be an embarrassing but cute moment with sparkles and shoes suddenly turned sour when Sparkle learned Steve was one of them. (You know, Em, Ally, it would be interesting to see a conversation between Steve and Jin in the regular comic where she asks him why a magical girl... and why not something so much better. Like Kung Shoe, or Whacking. It would let us see that despite their current camaraderieship, Jin has issues with the Magical Girls... and perhaps a glimpse of what drives Steve even now.)
Actually, the sparkles are an added dagger twist to Jin. Think of it. She's accidentally smacked this cute guy with a shoe and he accepts her apology and seems nice and then WHAM. She finds out he's one of THEM. A Magical Girl. He's going to do to her what Sparkle is doing to Daniel. Thus she draws back instinctively... because there are sparkles there. There is chemistry. And that's dangerous because she'll get her heart broken because even if he's a nice enough boy now... once Sparkle and her band get their claws into Steve, he'll change.
Which, when you think about it, did sort of happen. Though it was more protective camouflage for Steve. ^^;;

Ah but remember- up till now you've ONLY heard this story from Jin's perspective... who is quite clearly not a happy bunny right now.

Girl, if you turn Sparkle into the wronged party here, I'm going to start up a Footloose Drinking Game.
Though I must admit that it would be amusing if Sparkle wasn't nearly the bitch she is now until after Daniel dumped her, and that the "slights" were in Jin's head. ^^;;
Anyway... I suspect Daniel isn't exactly happy in his relationship at this point. Otherwise, why would he have ended up dumping Sparkle?

all I'm saying is surely you should know by now that you should never assume you have all the facts with footloose, because we love to throw a good curve ball at you.

Actually, I've been working on a theory. While Sparkle was not all roses and sweetness, and probably was snide toward Jin when she did see her, it was not Sparkle alone that killed Dan and her relationship. Instead, Jin was a significant contributor toward that end.
Think of it. Jin and Dan were twins. They were constantly together, constantly quarreling and trying to one-up each other for dominance (it's a wolf thing), while still loving each other dearly. Then Sparkle enters into the equation. First, she has no wolf blood. She's a norm. Second, she's uppity and works hard to ensure she is the dominant one in the area. She's stepping on Jin's toes in this regard, and Jin can't just put her in her place because Daniel is now siding with her.
Last, we have Jin losing her brother. Think of it: they were twins. All at once? Daniel is doing things without Jin. He's not remaining a part of the pack Jin was creating. And Jin is feeling suddenly abandoned. When Daniel is around, she tries to turn him against Sparkle, pointing out her flaws and all that and on the perceived snubs and the like... and just as she said, Daniel stopped smiling.
But he stopped smiling because of the conflict. Because he loves his sister... and cares for Sparkle. And they don't get along. And Jin can't just let it drop. She is pointing out all of the little things that happen in relationships, no matter how good, and Daniel is realizing that his family, his pack, isn't with him with this girl.
Add in the fact that Sparkle is a bit of a bitch? And that Sparkle starts trying to have Daniel and An fight? And Daniel is realizing that perhaps this relationship isn't for him. So he dumps Sparkle.
I suspect the relationship between Dan and Jin never quite returned to what it was before Sparkle... but Jin was so happy about Daniel no longer being with The Bitch, she never realized. Or just blamed Sparkle.
-----------
This does have implications for the future. There is a strong undercurrent of Dan/An. An isn't a wolf either. What's more, Keti is strongly attracted to An, even after learning An is a girl. We will probably (if I'm right about Jin poisoning Daniel's relationship with Sparkle) see Jin try to talk Dan out of being with An. At the very least she'll try to guilt-trip Daniel because of Keti's feelings.
(Mind you, the potential relationship Jin has with Steve doesn't enter into this. First, she's not anti-human. Her dad is a human. But he's cowed by his wife. Steve likewise has been cowed by Jin... which means Jin is dominant in the relationship, and the lack of wolf-blood is not a big factor because pack dominance remains in place (with Jin in charge).)
Or I could just need some caffeine before typing these things out. Maybe a nice cup of vanilla tea....

seeing dan protective of sparkle kinda creeps me out... tangent - so i'm thinking perhaps sparkle is one of those girls who's really nice to guys but a total bitch to other girls when there are no guys around?

If he's happy, then does it really matter what his girlfriend is like?
Yes, things changed. We have predestined knowledge here. But it's evident that at this point, he was happy with Sparkle. Even if Jin wasn't. (And she just walked away from her own chance at happiness. Damn it, there were sparkles (lower-case, not Bitchy-case) there! But no, she had to prejudge a guy just because he's a magical girl! And boy does that phrase amuse me to no end...)
Who knows? If things had lasted long enough, if An hadn't entered into the scene, Dan might have even started to soften the sharper edges on Sparkle. Hell, he might have been doing so... and then his dumping her because of her constant attempts to pit him against An and whatever looks she was shooting An's way ended up causing her quills to pop back out... and destroy the little good that he'd done with her.
Ain't what-ifs fun? =^-^=

WHAT IF... that smile on dan's face is just because he's thinking about magical girls getting changed? heheheheeh.
I Think dan is my absolute faveourite to draw- his facial expressions are by far the most subtle, but just how much emotion is showing on his face is an excellent indicator of how much on guard he is.

Well, I can understand his smiling while thinking of Sparkle getting changed. But some of those others? Eww. *shudders*
And Dan is a delight, isn't he? =^-^= Keti may be my favorite character, but Dan is a very close second.

i can't help but wonder if Dan is hamming it up a bit when it comes to his relationship with Sparkle. He's acting the way a boyfriend is supposed to act, not necessarily how he would act naturally in the situation. I think the probably changing face is at least somewhat genuine, though (if not a little exaggerated for the sake of his "audience"). He is a teenage boy, after all.
