I watched the first part of what has been described as a "shiny shiny revamp" of Eva at the anime club last night, and was sometimes impressed, sometimes a little scared and mostly just confused.
I've only seen about the first three episodes of Eva, and that was a long time ago (which reminds me, can I borrow it from someone, pleeeease?), but I seem to remember there was a little more explanation, although maybe that's just wishful thinking... The awesomeness and occasional scariness of the giant robot battles was slightly ruined by my constant internal monologue "But isn't anyone going to explain where the Angels come from? How come Shinji's dad already seems to know how many there are going to be? Hang on - what about the Dead Sea Scrolls? What the fuck is going on?" Was it always this random and confusing, or have they just geared the remake towards people who already know the whole story?

It's not so much that they explained more in the original TV series - rather that they threw less of the mysterious/intriguing/confusing stuff all at you at once. They made references to the Dead Sea Scrolls a lot during the early part of the series without explaining them, but needless to say they 'predict' a whole lot of shit (don't they always?), including the arrivals of the angels - hence why Gendou knows how maybe there are destined to be and so on. I've downloaded Rebuild 1.0 but haven't watched it yet. From flicking through it seems to cover roughly up to the end of episode #6 from the series (specifically since it gets to the bit at the end with Shinji getting Rei to smile). There is, however, a fuckload of bits and pieces that REALLY shouldn't be happening for at least 10 episodes or so - the most obvious of which being: a) LILITH. Wait, Misato knows about Lilith already? In fact, the whole 'Level EEE' thing was bizarre and new. And Shinji being shown Lilith at this early stage rather does shatter the whole "no really, the Second Impact was an asteroid, wink-wink nudge-nudge" thing they had going well into the original series. b) KAWORU. As a guy who appears for precisely one episode (#24) of the original series, introducing him at this stage is particularly interesting. Is he even allowed to turn up early given...uh...certain other things haven't happened yet? >_> c) There is one line in the post-credits 'preview' (it's awesome that it kept those) that makes zero sense to me in any single connotation: "And then, EVA Unit-06 and its pilot come down from the Moon." What? WHAT?! In the anime, EVA Units-05 and -06 are mentioned as being "under construction in Germany", but are never actually seen. My one thought is that they could possibly have Kaworu assigned as the pilot of EVA-06. He doesn't pilot anything in the TV series, but in the mangas he serves as a brief replacement for Asuka in EVA-02. But then, since he's been thrown forward to the start of the series then Asuka's going to still be around so...AGH, madness! So in other words: no I don't think it's meant to be one of those "only if you've watched the original can you understand" kind of things. They've just re-ordered some things and twisted other bits around. The influx of confusing and unexplained references is very much in the theme of the original series, except that cramming them into movie-sized chunks makes them all the more bewildering. As for borrowing the TV series, I'll look into it...

That makes sense (your explanation, not the series) - I guess it's similar to what would happen to a viewer's brain if LOST was a movie instead of a series... At least when something utterly confusing is split into chunks under an hour long, you get a chance to think about it and come up with a few theories.

In regards to my "As for borrowing the TV series, I'll look into it..." statement: I just tried to copy one of the DVDs to a DVD-R but it wouldn't let me, because apparently the DVD has 5.3GB of information on it which your typical 4.7GB DVD-R can't handle. Booo.

They've made a movie. They will make four movies, of which only one has been released.
The first three movies will be a retelling of the original TV series, to which end the first one ('Rebuild') covers roughly the first six TV episodes.
Don't ask me what the fourth movie will cover, I have no idea. It won't be out for a few years anyway.
Some bits of the plot have been jiggled around in the first film, hence our confusion.
Got all of that?

To be fair, there are only about five threads that don't fall under that catagory.
