Most of what's on Emily's list of banned subjects is pretty straightforward:
As of 2 September, 2012, the list read: Penguins Pie Cannons Lewd Jokes Telling Em how to run her life or her comic [Anything you shouldn't say in front of a child]
And it's that last one that's got me a bit confused. I've lived quite a few different places, and standards of what is appropriate to say in front of a child have varied completely. Some places it was appropriate to say anything in front of a child, and children were treated as small adults. Others, children were to be kept sheltered from the "Evils" of the "Modern World", and not allowed to use any form of media that didn't exist about 200 years ago in the North American continent, and even the books were edited to fit a specific subset of the original subject matter.
Clearly neither of those were meant, and I'm sure there isn't a discrete element to it, but I'd like to know what, according to the Cretrices, is considered inappropriate for children's ears.

Hey Nilam. the list exists for these reasons:
Pies and penguins... these seem to be running in-jokes that some people try to bring over from other forums/ fandoms. They have absolutely no relevance to the IBYKSVerse, and I resented people trying to make them a thing here. they fall under the general "keep it on topic" rule that I enforce on the forum.
Lewd jokes/ swearing/ stuff you wouldn't say in front of a kid. The website is not just a comic, it is the first place people come to if they google mine or ally's names in all likelihood. Ally is an academic and writer by trade, I am a freelance artist and teacher. The people looking us up are likely to be students, parents of students or potential employers. We have to maintain an air of professional conduct on the site. Parents of my students understand that I am a comic artist and that the comic may contain the occaisional rude word, flash of nudity or violent act. I can justify those as long as they are pertinent to the plot of the comic, I can't justify them in other parts of the site. By being mindful of what you say in the chatbox you are protecting both our professional reputations, which allow us to get work, get paid and carry on making comics for you. if you need a guideline, think of film ratings. I think you call it 'G' in america (we call it U for universal), if you couldn't do it in a film for kids, don't do it at all. The comic itself is pretty much 12A in english terms, where you can get away with stuff as long as it's relevant not gratuitous, but as I said before, what applies to the comic does not apply to the site as a whole.
Telling us what to do/'helpful' advice. I'm not gonna lie, I have no better reason for this than it hacks me off. Constructive criticism can be helpful, as can pointing out my inevitable spelling mistakes, and I appreciate those. What I don't appreciate is people telling me how they think both comics should be colour, or how I should spend my free time, or how I should divide up site content or whatever... I am extremely busy, I make this comic for free in my spare time. I am extremely dedicated to a regular update schedule, I feel AWFUL when I can't update on time, it gets my hackles up when people think they know better than me about how to manage that spare time or what I should do if there isn't an update. For example this week when people said I should ask for fanart instead... have you ever invested time in trying to convince someone to draw something for you for free? It's very hard, at the very least they're gonna want some kind of swapback later... so instead of a free piece of filler I've just racked up having to do some art for someone else instead- so I might just as well work on the comic myself. /done ranting on that point. tl;dr I work hard for you. Please don't imply I'm doing it wrong.
Keep it shortif you can't say it in one or two messages, you should probably take it to the forum.
Thinks we do like Hilarious puns. we like those a lot, as we do all wordplay (though no innuendo for previous reasons) rhyming and alliteration. We think it's very clever. Talking about the comic. yes please. pointing out my spelling mistakes. I am a dunce and I can't type.

Ah, excellent! Thank you for that explanation.
I didn't realize that the front page was intended to serve as more than a gateway to the comics, although in retrospect the use seems very reasonable. Professionalism in a first impression is very important, and it makes sense that you would want to try and keep a professional appearance on your front page.
Thanks again for being an interactive artist rather than one of those aloof ascetic artists, amassing amazing works without writing one wit for fanciful fans!
