My dad's reaction to my mentioning of PR over the phone was "If we had PR we'd always have a hung parliament."
Then he said he reckons we should have a US-style presidential system.

im kinda liking the situation as a lib dem supporter. Whoever they choose to back at this stage is essentially the winner, giving them a good bargining position

Yes, but the Lib Dems themselves will be fucked over either way.
Gordon Brown has resigned. David Cameron will be Prime Minister tomorrow - it merely remains to be seen what extent of support the Lib Dems have agreed to give him.

Maybe I'm being naive, but I'm feeling quite optimistic about the Lib Dems' position now. It seems like they've been given several proper, serious jobs as part of this government (I was worried for a while that they were going to be fobbed off the way you do with tiny children when you're cooking a big meal - "Now, I'll do the roast and the vegetables and the pudding, and you can pour the orange juice into this jug and add some ice cubes!"), which will hopefully let them build up some influence, get the ball rolling on some of their policies and block some of the dafter Tory ideas.

My optimism has soared rapidly since details of the coalition have come out. Significantly, the fixed parliament for five years prevents the Lib Dems being screwed over in 9-12 months' time as I'd originally feared. Plus I watched the Cameron/Clegg press conference and was very impressed by their attitude.

I was particularly happy to see plans to fix some of the Big Brother-esque nanny-state laws and policies that got through under Labour. Hopefully we'll see the Digital Economy Bill and certain parts of the Coroner's and Justice Act 2009 get repealed.

I'm really pleased ID cards are out, they were a bloody ridiculous idea.
