I fixed the door of a photocopier yesterday after one of the guys at work pulled it off while trying to clear a paper jam! Usually we clear the paper jams and sort out the little problems and call out the technicians for big stuff (like part of the copier becoming detached), so I felt all capable being able to fix it myself ;D

sometimes I think my grandad doesn't like me at all. he phoned today and I picked up, first he came up with about 4 other names before he got to emily (and no he isn't senile) then he wanted to speak to dad not me and when i said he wasn't in and started taking down a message to call him back, he passed the phone over to my gran without even saying bye. He thinks I'm a slacker.

You know, Em? Speaking as a slacker here? You definitely ain't one. You work hard to achieve the dreams in your grasp. No doubt even if you were some millionaire-banker, your granddad would still be a shmuck. *hugs tight*
Who care what he thinks. In my book? You're better than aces.

He doesnt hate you Em, He's practically deaf so not good with phones. last time i rang he mumbled 'what?' at me about 6 times before putting the phone down to get Granny. And he doesnt call you emily because he's too busy calling ME emily. I think he's more senile than he'd like us all to think (remember the recent head injury Hmmmmm?). Dont take it personally, if we're gonna to be offended by relatives let it be Jill. She's the deliberately evil one

*sigh* Em, I really don't know what to say. I mean, if Lu's right and his mind is starting to slip, he may very well not know you. His mental image of Emily may be this short(er) bright-eyed imp who looks like she snuck in from a faerie circle and adopted them, instead of the brilliant and well-armed lass that you now are. (Armed with shoes!)
My grandmother doesn't even know who I am anymore. (Alzheimer's) And the one time she tried to identify me, she called me "the slacker" (which I am, but still!). I pretty much know that the person I grew up loving so much doesn't exist any longer. She hasn't existed for several years.
The same may be happening here. He may very well not be the grandfather you remember. Even if his mind isn't slipping, he may be retreating behind a shell of silence as his hearing goes. He probably doesn't know what he's doing when he hurts you.
*hug* Girl, you are someone I gladly call friend. You're special. Don't let your doubts and fears and his own failings make you doubt that.

My other grandad had alzheimers, but he was always happy to talk to me because he thought I was my mother (we look alike)- i guess I'm justnot used to being the one he doesn't want to speak to this time around.

Em, he's never been good on phones, please don't take it personally. He also struggles to think of things to talk about that show he's interested when he is really quite out of touch with my generation, never mind yours. He's better face to face but even then he struggles and, yes, he is slipping away from us gradually. Don't give up on him, though, please. (He does love you, he does love us all, but he's tired)

*gives Em a quick hug* Listen to geuzegirly. It's easy to drift away from your grandparents... I know I did with my grandmother, and I was rather shocked to realize just how much she'd changed. The mental image I had of her was nothing like the person she'd become, while my cousin Ellie and my parents witnessed her decline much closer. You remember the person they were, not who they are now. And it can hurt. (Though my grandmother remembered my name yesterday when we visited, but not who my parents were. My mom thinks she might have overheard one of them say my name when we were coming into the room or something. She was much more interested in eating dinner than talking though. ^^;; Not that I blame her. Put food in front of me and it becomes "what were we talking about again?")
In his heart and soul, he's very likely very proud of you, Emily. He just doesn't know how to get that message out through the flesh.

You know what I hate? City punks.
Saw three of the little bastards chase some poor guy down the street, throw the guy onto the hood of my car while starting to pound on him, and then kick him on the ground while he was down. Sadly, I didn't get a cell phone pic of them - didn't think in time. They ran off before I could get out of my car, and the guy didn't want the cops called.
Little bastards.

I'm not to fond of when hanging out with guys, they decide to be complete pigs. Burping, farting and horrking things up. ewwwwwwwwww
And how do you have clean hands but a VERY visible amount of dirt under your fingers? ewwwww

Because it's far easier to wash grease and dirt off of your hands than under your fingernails. That, you need to soak to get out. (I find a nice shower works - you angle your fingers so that the jets of water get right under the nail edge, and it powers the grease and dirt out.)

I thought those were foot scrubbers. Then again, the ones I've seen usually have a pumice rock on the other side for callouses...
