I need more songs for my MP3 player. Loads more.
Since iTunes no longer bans non-iPods from its music, I've been periodically perusing it since I got my new MP3 player a couple of months ago.
Because my memory for music is shit, my main tactic has been to look up one song/artist I've remembered and then just floated around the store by clicking on links or compilation playlists to find similar stuff. So, say, one day I went in and came out with a bunch of 80s/New Wave stuff. Another time I went in and got a bunch of 70s stuff like The Who/Pink Floyd/etc. I've also picked up random odd-songs of newer stuff which I quite like - so I've got nothing against the 90s/00s.
So please throw out artists names that may seem obvious to you but not to my sucky memory. Specific song titles aren't necessary but if you like. This is particularly directed at Emily, whose taste I tend to quite like - whether electro-y or otherwise.
Things I already have include (ranging from only 1 song to maybe 5 or 6, depending):
Alice Cooper Blondie Blur Britney Spears Duran Duran Europe Eurythmics Falco Fatboy Slim Frankie Goes To Hollywood Green Day Incubus Iron Maiden Jamiroquai Journey Justice Justin Timberlake Kim Wilde Led Zeppelin Lenny Kravitz Michael Jackson Nena Nightwish No Doubt Oasis Pet Shop Boys Pink Floyd Queen Queens of the Stone Age Red Hot Chili Peppers Republica Robbie Williams Slade Supergrass T. Rex Texas The Animals The Bird and the Bee The Cardigans The Doors The Offspring The Stranglers The Who Within Temptation
And so on.
So, please: cheese is welcome. Besides, I'll probably end up inflicting a lot of this on Pete in the drive down to Cornwall this summer...

I had no idea you liked Nightwish and Within Temptation! When I get home I'll upload the "if you like them you'll like these" list I got from a friend.
You might like some of Jonathan Coulton's music - he does the whole semi-stand-up with a guitar thing, and a lot of his songs are quite clever.
Hellogoodbye fall into the electro-y camp.
Just to completely clarify, because I had no idea iTunes had changed their policy - I don't need to do what I used to do (as in write my iTunes music to a CD and rip it back into Media Player) to put things on my MP3? (Yes, I'm sure it's a stupid question, but I want to make completely sure before I start spending on iTunes again).

Nightwish and Within Temptation are thieved from Yasha's CDs, obviously...
And what iTunes have done is extend their 'iTunes Plus' list to cover virtually every song in their catalogue. These songs no longer have any stupid limitation on not being able to copy them between different media and such, which was the main problem.
They're still encoded in AAC though, so you'll need an MP3 player that's capable of playing that...and not all are.

Here's the list, with my friend's commentary. Bear in mind I haven't heard any of these yet, so they might be rubbish... Xandria Amberian Dawn Tristania Epica Battlelore After Forever Sirenia Beautiful Sin (although her voice reminds me of Bonnie Tyler...) Unsun The sins of thy beloved Theatre of tragedy Letal solaris Oratory (they are Portuguese. In my opinion they try to sound like Nightwish. And the lead singer is out of tune quite often...) Amoris umbra Another one I like is Van Canto - they do metal a cappella, which just makes me laugh: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCGQiGEYl4Y(I mean, come on, they're actually singing "RiddlydiddlydiddlydiddlyDUMDUMDUM!" ;D)

I'll try not to overload this thing with goth-metal-stuff...so maybe only a few. >_>
And although RIDDLYDIDDLYDIDDLYDIDDLYDIDDLY-DUM-DUM-DUM = instant win, iTunes only has it in music video form. Boooo.

Some recent additions.
I had forgotten how much I liked the band 'Space' in a 90's kind of way. specifically the song influenza, which I had entirely forgotten about untill i heard it yesterday. Their greatest hits is a really good double cd album.
Also recommended from the unlikely source of Becky comes the group 'Champions of Breakfast' who I can only describe as a kind of electro Flight of the Conchords...

Hmm, I think I quite like 'That Beep'. Not so much the other two. Had a browse through some of their other tracks on iTunes...they are rather eclectic, aren't they? Maybe just the one song for now, until I've delved a bit more thoroughly.
Already have a couple of Journey and Bon Jovi...
Foo Fighters songs all just fade into the background for me and I haven't really ever heard one that doesn't leave me distracted by something else within a minute or so. Eh.
Haha...Spandau Ballet... I've already gone extensively into 80s cheese and didn't really like any of their songs enough to get them. Similarly for Aha - and while the music video for 'Take On Me' is somewhat entertaining, the song itself is less so. >_>
I think I will get a Natalie Imbruglia track or two ('Torn' and 'Big Mistake', say) to expand in that direction via the Republica/Cardigans/etc. arm of the collection. Not one for The Corrs, though - Catatonia are pretty much my limit as far as semi-celtic mid-90s poppiness goes. No crossing the Irish Sea this time. :-p

what no B*witched? heeheehee...
ooh if you're expanding in the cardigans/rebuplica direction, then also try Elastica and Garbage (as I've mentioned before) I'd also say Alisha's Attic- but practically everyone but me thinks they suck so maybe not.

Ah yes, I already have some Garbage. Forgot about them... At the moment the only songs I have are 'I Think I'm Paranoid' and 'Push It'. I also have 'The World Is Not Enough' somewhere, but I've listened to it so much over the years that I'm ignoring it for the moment. So you know, while I'm here, I may as well add 'Stupid Girl', 'Only Happy When It Rains', 'Milk', and 'Why Do You Love Me'...just to expand it a bit.
Ooh, Elastica! It seems that 'Connection' was one of those songs that I knew the catchy bit (...well it's just a couple of noises, really), but never really knew what song it was. Downloaded. Also got 'Stutter' and 'S.O.F.T.', being theother two whose 30 second iTunes previews I liked the most. >_>
I think my usual problem with Alisha's Attic has been that the songs miss some little bit of edge that makes me want to keep listening to them for the full four minutes... They're not bad, but I do tend to get a bit restless when they're on. Might still download the obligatory 'I Am, I Feel' though...
